Organic materials were developed for use as tissue-equivalent dosimeters operating on the principle of organic radiophotoluminescence (ORPL) based on the emission-switching of fluorescein and p-benzoquinone (BQ) in polymethylmethacrylate and propylene carbonate. The BQ-derived radical ions generated by X-ray irradiation open the lactone ring of fluorescein, thereby producing emissive molecules. The fluorescence properties and potential applications of the dosimeters were investigated. At the optimal composition (1 wt% fluorescein and 10 wt% BQ), the linear range was 0–4 Gy. Furthermore, the dose sensitivity in this range was significantly higher than that of Ag-phosphate glass. The sensitivity range and high radiation-dose-sensitivity make the material suitable for use in radiotherapy.
