title = "Electrochemical lithium insertion of heat treated and chemically modified multi-wall carbon nanotubes",
abstract = "Highly aligned multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), in the form of membrane (CNM) and powder (MWNTP) were examined for Li ion insertion host in aprotic medium. Effects of heat treatment and surface modification by elemental fluorine on the structure and electrochemical properties of the nanotubes were investigated. The surface structure and properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N2 adsorption isotherm. The BET surface area of the nanotubes was very large compared to graphitic carbon. Heat treatment at 3000°C induced better crystallinity with a decrease in surface area. Fluorination at 50°C removed the disorder carbon from the surface of pristine sample. The reversible capacity in the first cycle was 516 mAh/g with a very high irreversible capacity. The reversible capacity increased from 22% to 80% after the second cycle.",
