Low-temperature high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been performed on a non-cuprate superconductor Sr 2RuO 4 (T c approximately 1 K), which has the same crystal structure as La 2CuO 4, but with RuO 2 layers replacing CuO 2. High-resolution ARPES spectra obtained along Γ - Z line (Ru-O bonding direction) in Brillouin zone show the existence of an extended van-Hove singularity (VHS) close to E F (20 plus or minus 2 meV) like high-T c cuprates, regardless of the character of the electronic states at E F, suggesting that an extended VHS is a general feature of correlated two-dimensional d - electron metals. This requests re-examination of the VHS scenario for superconducting properties of cuprates, while the observed T-linear resistivity seems to be consistent with the present result.
