A new type of tobermorite for removing heavy metal ions in waste water was prepared by hydrothermal treatment of slurries containing quartz, calcium hydroxide and disodium hydrogen phosphate. X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence analysis showed that tobermorite with a high Ca/Si molar ratio is formed and contains phosphate species after the treatment. The incorporation of phosphate species in tobermorite induced the increase in the amount of Ca 2+ ions. Tobermorite containing phosphate species showed a higher heavy metal ion adsorption capacity than tobermorite without phosphate.
