A MoSiB based coating was applied to the 1st-generation MoSiBTiC alloy using pack cementation process. After conditioning at 1300 °C for 10 h in air, the coating developed into four layers: an oxide layer, a MoSi2 layer with Mo5Si3 and MoB precipitates, a Mo5Si3 layer, and a MoB+Mo5SiB2 (T2) layer. However, visible holes often formed in the coating due to defects, and the oxidation proceeded to the substrate during subsequent cyclic oxidation. In a controlled test on a MoSiBTiC alloy with lower TiC volume fraction, an intact coating formed after the conditioning at 1300 °C and provided an effective oxidation resistance.
