A study on the hydrothermal or aquathermal cracking of bitumen in the range of supercritical water clarified the reaction conditions and verified the preliminary results to develop a new on site upgrading technology. Bitumens were easily converted to light oils, with simultaneous reduction of sulfur to ~ 0.5%, vanadium to 10%, and coke production to 10%. At 703 K and 15 min reaction time with 0.1 M KOH solution at 25% water loading, sufficiently light oils for pipeline transportation were produced. The fluctuations of the oil/water ratio in the range of 0.3:1 to 1:1, KOH concentration from 0.03 to 1 M, and water loading of 20-30% are not serious influences. A continuous flow reactor of 0.5 bpd capacity for upgrading bitumen was operated. From this, fundamental data for the new process were generated. In hydrothermal cracking, H2 or catalyst is not used. In alkali hydrothermal cracking, CO2 or H2S is not produced. A combined system with SAGD can use wastewater as steam for injection.
