Fracture mechanics is recognized as a powerful tool for the integrity assessment of structural components. For safety, a quantitative sizing of the cracks originally present or that developed during operation is required. Strategic techniques developed by the author and co-workers are described for ultrasonic nondestructive testing of closed cracks. One is an approach which utilizes the effect of plastic deformation around the crack on ultrasonic wave velocity. Another approach is analysis of an inverse problem to determine the size of closed cracks through comparison of theory and experimental measurement of ultrasonic wave reflection at the closed crack surface.
